Who Are We

  Dr Natalie Jackson – Director:

Natalie Jackson is Director of Natalie Jackson Demographics Ltd., and a Research Associate at the National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA), University of Waikato. Recent past positions were Professor of Demography and Massey University (2015-17), Director and Professor of Demography at NIDEA (2010-2014), and Associate Professor in the School of Sociology and Social Work at University of Tasmania (1999-2010).

Natalie holds a PhD in Demography from the Australian National University, and Bachelor and Master of Social Science Degrees in Demography and Social Anthropology from the University of Waikato.

Natalie’s primary expertise is on the subnational ending of population growth and the underlying demographic drivers of this trend. The consequences of these trends are relevant for all levels of government, labour market, welfare state, education and health care policy, and for business in general. Natalie’s related research fields are labour market demography, the demography of subpopulations such as ethnic groups, and the demography of inequality.

Natalie is the author of over 200 papers and technical reports on the topic of population ageing/demographic change and has given around 360 invited addresses/conference papers and 440 related media interviews. Having expert knowledge of how to undertake and use population projections is central to these activities, and Natalie has taught and given workshops on the topic in Australia and New Zealand for the past 20 years


  Rachael McMillan – Research Associate:

Rachael McMillan holds degrees in Environmental Planning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and a Masters in Demography (First Class Honours).  For her Masters, Rachael researched strategic interventions for dealing with population decline in regional and peripheral areas.  Her thesis involved examining demographic, economic, social and spatial changes within a complex framework of drivers and actors from international to local scales. Rachael is based at Hamilton City Council working on strategy and driving forward regional collaboration through the implementation of the Waikato Plan.

Rachael brings a wide range of skills to Natalie Jackson Demographics Ltd from both the public and private sectors.
